ICEM advisory services
for the conservation and sustainable use
of natural resources.

In partnership with others, ICEM seeks to help shape development in ways that reduce poverty and sustain efficient and equitable management of natural resources. It achieves this through piloting and demonstration, capacity and institution building, collaborative research and policy studies, networking and knowledge dissemination.

ICEM works with national and local governments to help in the analysis of problems and options, and in defining priorities for action. The Centre supports program and project development and management, acting as a facilitator and catalyst in bringing together the skills, organizations and resources needed to address those priorities.

ICEM's project planning and management services include supporting government in developing priorities into funded and technical supported actions. It also involves building the best technical teams to address those priorities in creative and innovative ways, bringing in the most advanced technologies and appropriate practices from global experience. ICEM's team includes experts in facilitation of planning sessions, workshops, conferences and meetings.

ICEM's technical fields of focus:

  • Climate Change Modelling:
    develop assessments and predictions on the impacts of climate change, based on variable factors and inter-connected sectors. provide policy recommendations to relevant stakeholders.

  • Environmental Assessment:
    in developing and implementing systems for strategic environmental assessment and EIA and in the conduct, piloting and demonstration of specific SEAs and EIAs.
  • Environmental and Ecological Economics:
    economic tools and mechanisms which emphasize the biophysical foundations of economies and stress the interdependencies between natural and social systems - including costs and benefit analysis and alternative policies to deal with air pollution, water quality, toxic substances, solid waste, and climate change.
  • Integrated Natural Resource Planning and Management:
    advising governments on integrated policy, planning, and management of natural resources, especially relating to water and river basins.
  • GIS and Modeling:
    using geographical information systems and models to identify relationships, analysis impacts and define options for management of natural resources and systems.

  • Protected Areas:
    building national systems of protected areas - including policies and institutions, regulations and guidelines, landscape and site planning and management, and training.
  • Biodiversity Conservation:
    supporting countries in implementation of the global Convention on the Conservation of Biological Diversity and related international agreements - including surveys, monitoring, information systems, rehabilitation and management.
  • Conservation Financing:
    services to ensure that the foundations, structures and processes are in place to achieve financial sustainability for conservation and environmental protection - including systems for more efficient use of existing finances and for attracting funding from diverse sources, and the establishment and management of environment funds.
  • Community Participation:
    structures, methods and processes for building community participation and involvement, action research, community 'ownership' and increasing a project's sustainability.
